Xiaomi reportedly cancels Xiaomi 18 Ultra smartphone project

Reports indicate that Xiaomi may cancel the development of its upcoming Xiaomi 18 Ultra smartphone due to escalating production costs. While the company has focused on a strategy of continuous hardware upgrades, insiders suggest that the cost of implementing advanced camera technology has reached a point of diminishing returns.

To achieve its ambitious photographic goals, the device was rumored to feature a 600 MP camera system, potentially utilizing three 200 MP sensors. However, such high-end components would have driven the price significantly higher than previous models. In China, the price increase compared to the Xiaomi 17 Ultra was estimated to be approximately 43 percent.

The planned specifications for the Ultra model included a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6m processor, 12 GB of RAM, and a flat OLED display with ultra-thin 1 mm bezels. Despite these high-performance targets, the financial barrier for consumers appears to be a decisive factor in the project's potential cancellation.
