Xidian University researchers develop eel-inspired sensor
Researchers at Xidian University in Xi'an have developed a bioinspired electrostatic field sensor modeled after the hunting mechanisms of electric eels. The sensor functions by detecting disturbances in an electric field to identify various materials, including metal, plastic, glass, and wood.
As detailed in the journal Advanced Materials, the technology operates without active signal transmission, mechanical contact, or reliance on light conditions. This allows for functionality in complete darkness. Potential applications include contactless material inspection on production lines, gesture-based control for robotic arms, and the non-destructive testing of coatings.
