Ximo Michavila retrospective opens in Valencia

The Fundación Bancaja has opened a retrospective exhibition in Valencia titled ‘Ximo Michavila. Centenario (1926-2026)’ to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the artist from l’Alcora. The exhibition brings together approximately one hundred works created between 1951 and 2004, alongside more than 80 documents from his personal archive, many of which are being shown for the first time.

Michavila’s diverse career spanned several artistic movements, including the Valencian avant-garde with the Parpalló Group, geometry, constructivism, and landscape abstraction. His work frequently explored themes such as the cosmos, observed through his telescope, and the Albufera wetlands. His depictions of the Albufera often reflected a deep concern for environmental deterioration, leading some to view him as an early precursor to ecological art.

The exhibition also highlights a less known aspect of his work: the relationship between painting and music. His later ‘Contrapunto’ cycle features works dedicated to musical figures such as John Cage, Kurt Weill, Arnold Schönberg, and Pierre Schaeffer.
