Xino Nero residents protest proposed mega-photovoltaic plant
Residents of Xino Nero, Florina, have organized a protest outside the Florina Courthouse following a legal hearing regarding a proposed mega-photovoltaic plant. The lawsuit was filed against the company Green Repower Photovoltaic I.K. E. regarding a planned 60 MW solar park covering approximately 840 acres, which would include energy storage batteries located near the settlement.
Local residents and the Coordinating Committee of the Struggle argue that the project will have severe consequences for the local microclimate, the environment, and the quality of life. They specifically cite potential damage to local agriculture—including viticulture, vegetable farming, and orchards—as well as livestock, beekeeping, and small to medium-sized businesses. Furthermore, they expressed concerns regarding the impact on the local aquifer, which is noted for its high water quality.
The legal process follows a June 2024 appeal to the Council of State, which was rejected as untimely. Although the recent hearing was conducted without lawyers from either side present, residents gathered to demonstrate their firm opposition to the project. A court decision is expected in several months.
