Xiomara Castro denies reports of detention in Mexico
Reports claiming that former Honduran President Xiomara Castro was detained by Mexican authorities at the Benito Juárez International Airport have been denied by her family and political allies. The rumors suggested that Mexican immigration officials had rejected her diplomatic passport, leading to her retention.
Héctor Zelaya, the former president’s son, and former Foreign Minister Enrique Reina both characterized the reports as “totally false news.” They clarified that Castro is currently in Honduras, where she has been monitoring the health recovery of her husband, former President Manuel Zelaya Rosales.
Manuel Zelaya has been in Mexico for medical reasons, a trip described as non-political. While the rumors circulated during his medical stay, officials confirmed that Xiomara Castro was not detained and remains in Honduras to attend to personal and state matters.
