Xochimilco axolotl conservation featured in new stage production

The interdisciplinary production ‘Aventura Axolotl: ¡A la chinampa!’ is set to premiere in Mexico City, using music, dance, and theater to promote the conservation of the axolotl and its habitat in Xochimilco.

Written, directed, choreographed, and musicalized by Caitlin Joanna Hutchins, the 65-minute show features ten artists performing 15 original songs accompanied by live drums, keyboard, and electric bass. The narrative follows an axolotl transitioning from a laboratory setting to a ‘chinampa-refugio’ (refuge chinampa), accompanied by scientists and local residents to illustrate the importance of ecological restoration.

The world premiere is scheduled for October 10, 2026, at the Botanical Garden of the UNAM Institute of Biology. Subsequent performances will be held at Bambudésica within Huerto Roma Verde on October 24 and 25. The production incorporates contemporary dance, acting, and narration to transform scientific information into an engaging experience for families and youth.
