Xochimilco implements recycled hair project to clean canals and protect soil
A circular economy project in Xochimilco, Mexico, is utilizing recycled human hair to mitigate pollution in the region's canals and protect the soil of its traditional chinampas. In collaboration with Cox México, Matter of Trust Latam, and Santuario Ajolote, the initiative employs hair-filled absorbent barriers, known as ‘booms’, to capture oils, hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and fecal coliforms from the waterways.
Beyond water remediation, the recycled hair is used as an organic mulch on the soil. This application helps retain moisture, reduce evaporation, regulate pH levels, and promote the growth of beneficial mycorrhizal fungi. Local farmers in San Gregorio Atlapulco have reported improved water retention and higher crop quality after two test harvests. The project aims to empower local communities to maintain these filtration systems autonomously, with potential replication planned for Tlaxcala, Nuevo León, and Chiapas.
