XPENG demonstrates the evolution of smartphones as digital car keys

The automotive industry is seeing a shift where smartphones are replacing traditional physical keys. As demonstrated by XPENG, mobile devices are evolving into comprehensive digital keys that go beyond simple remote commands.

Through manufacturer-developed applications, smartphones act as a central control hub for the vehicle. Users can remotely lock or unlock doors, manage climate control, check battery or fuel levels, monitor range, and locate the vehicle on a map. These apps also allow for software updates and monitoring of charging status.

Advanced systems enable vehicles to automatically recognize a driver approaching with a smartphone in their pocket, unlocking the doors without manual intervention. This technology also facilitates permission management, allowing for more flexible control over vehicle usage compared to traditional physical keys.
