PlayStation 5 jailbreak enables Xbox and Windows game support

Developers are expanding the capabilities of jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles through new emulation and compatibility projects. The XPSemu project, a native port of the open-source xemu emulator, has entered its Alpha 1 phase. It allows users to run original Xbox titles such as ‘Halo 2’, ‘Forza Motorsport’, and ‘Fable: The Lost Chapters’ on PS5 hardware. While performance varies—with ‘Halo 2’ reaching up to 50 FPS with patches and ‘Forza Motorsport’ running at 15–21 FPS—developers note that the primary bottleneck is the CPU rather than the GPU.

Simultaneously, a project known as Project PP (or PS5 Proton) is being developed to enable the execution of Windows games on the console. This tool utilizes a port of the Wine compatibility layer to translate DirectX commands into Vulkan, leveraging the architectural similarities between the PS5 and modern PCs.

These advancements are made possible by the ‘Relapse’ jailbreak, which supports firmware versions ranging from 7.00 to 13.60. While these projects offer significant flexibility for homebrew applications and cross-platform gaming, they require a jailbroken system and are subject to the limitations of specific firmware versions.
