XRISM observations reveal supermassive black hole winds are 100x more powerful

Astronomers using the XRISM X-ray space observatory have discovered that winds driven by supermassive black holes carry approximately 100 times more energy than previously estimated. By studying the quasar H1821+643, located in the constellation Draco roughly 3.4 billion light-years from Earth, researchers found that these energetic outflows extend roughly 300,000 light-years into space.

This discovery challenges previous astrophysical models which assumed that the energy from black holes remained largely confined within their host galaxies. Instead, the high-precision data from XRISM revealed intense turbulence in hot gas, driven by iron ions, that spreads far beyond galactic boundaries. The energy output from this widespread motion is estimated to be comparable to the force of several billion supernova explosions.
