Xu Jiaqing fined for conflict of interest involving son's trip to Dongsha Island
Xu Jiaqing, Chairperson of the Overseas Community Affairs Council, was fined 100,000 TWD by the Control Yuan for violating the Act on Recusal of Public Servants Due to Conflicts of Interest. The violation occurred when she arranged for her son to participate in the ‘Overseas Youth Dongsha Experience Camp’ on Dongsha Island.
Following inquiries from the Taiwan People Party regarding whether the fine had been paid or if an appeal was filed, the Control Yuan declined to provide specific details, citing ‘personal privacy’ under the Freedom of Government Information Act. This refusal has drawn criticism from politicians, including Chen Chih-han, who argued that the matter involves significant public interest and that the Control Yuan is shielding a high-ranking official.
In response to allegations of a ‘double standard’ regarding how different privilege controversies are handled, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an stated that the Control Yuan is aware of its authority and functions, adding that ‘a gentleman is open and upright.’
