Xuxa Meneghel defends tour costumes amid ageism and sexism claims
Brazilian presenter Xuxa Meneghel has addressed recent controversies regarding her stage costumes during her tour, ‘O Último Voo da Nave’. During an appearance on ‘Domingão com Huck’, Xuxa defended her choice of attire, attributing the backlash to a combination of ageism and sexism. She compared the criticism she received to the reception of singer Ney Matogrosso, noting that while he is permitted to show his body and dance in similar clothing, she faces ridicule as a 63-year-old woman.
Xuxa also admitted to a personal error during a performance in São Paulo, where a costume malfunction occurred after a wardrobe change. She explained that the high-cut styles, inspired by 1980s and 1990s fashion, were difficult to manage, and she has since begun wearing two pairs of stockings to ensure better coverage and comfort.
The situation has sparked a public dispute with presenter Mara Maravilha. Following comments from comedian Dona Déa Lúcia suggesting that the criticism against Xuxa was fueled by envy, Mara Maravilha indicated she might take legal action regarding the unauthorized use of her image in social media posts linking her to the remarks. Additionally, Mara has announced the sale of her own classic costumes from her time hosting ‘Show Maravilha’ on SBT.
