Xuyen A General Hospital treats woman for rare mediastinal tumor

A 27-year-old woman from Cu Chi, Ho Chi Minh City, was treated for a rare mediastinal tumor after experiencing sudden shortness of breath and chest pain while working at a market.

Upon being rushed to Xuyen A General Hospital, diagnostic imaging revealed a 5.5 cm tumor located in the anterior mediastinum. The mass was adhered to the superior vena cava and the upper lobe of the right lung. Because the mediastinum contains critical structures such as the heart, major blood vessels, trachea, and esophagus, the tumor's position posed a significant risk of compression to vital organs.

Medical professionals, including Dr. Tran Quang Thai from the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, performed a surgical resection via a sternal approach. The surgical team had to carefully dissect the tumor from major veins near the heart to prevent damage to surrounding nerves and blood vessels. Pathological results identified the mass as a mature cystic teratoma.
