Xylella fastidiosa detected in Calabria for the first time

The bacterium Xylella fastidiosa has been detected for the first time in Calabria, specifically in the Taurianova area of the Reggio Calabria province. Following molecular analysis by CREA, seven olive plants were confirmed positive out of 35 samples taken in Contrada Olivetella.

In response, the Calabria Regional Government has issued a decree establishing an infected zone with a 50-meter radius and a 2.5-kilometer buffer zone. This buffer zone encompasses parts of Taurianova, Cittanova, and Terranova Sappo Minulio. Within the infected area, authorities are mandated to uproot and destroy the affected plants and other sensitive species, while implementing measures to control insect vectors.

In the buffer zone, intensive phytosanitary monitoring and inspections will be conducted. The regional administration has also established a crisis committee to coordinate containment efforts and prevent a widespread epidemic that could devastate the local olive oil industry, which is a vital component of the regional economy.
