Xylella fastidiosa detected in Basilicata and Calabria

The bacterium Xylella fastidiosa has been detected in new locations within southern Italy, prompting regional health and agricultural responses.

In Basilicata, authorities confirmed the first case of the bacterium in the province of Matera. The pathogen, specifically the multiplex subspecies, was identified on an almond tree in the Ciccolocane area near the border with Altamura. This finding follows intensified monitoring efforts conducted by the regional Phytosanitary Office near the Puglia border. Laboratory analyses were conducted by Alsia Metapontum Agrobios and confirmed by Crea Difesa e Certificazione in Rome.

In Calabria, a localized outbreak was identified in the Taurianova area of Reggio Calabria. Regional inspections confirmed the presence of the bacterium on seven out of 35 sampled olive trees. In response, the regional government has established a crisis committee and implemented phytosanitary measures, including the delimitation of an infected zone of 50 meters and a 2.5-kilometer buffer zone covering parts of Taurianova, Cittanova, and Terranova Sappo Minulio. Eradication measures and reinforced monitoring are being deployed to contain the spread.
