Xylitol sweetener linked to increased cardiovascular risk
New research presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Munich suggests a link between the sweetener xylitol and increased cardiovascular risks. Xylitol is a common sugar substitute used in products such as chewing gum, toothpaste, jams, and yogurt.
Analyzing data from 17,710 participants across the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging and the UK-based EPIC-Norfolk study, researchers found that individuals with the highest blood xylitol levels faced a 57% higher risk of major cardiovascular events, such as heart attack or stroke, or death within a six-year period. In the long-term EPIC-Norfolk study, the risk remained 18% higher after 30 years.
Dr. Marco Witkowski noted that previous research indicated xylitol might increase platelet clotting activity. While the study shows a strong association, experts emphasize it is observational and does not prove that xylitol directly causes these medical emergencies. Further studies are required to establish causality. Health professionals continue to recommend a balanced diet and limited intake of processed foods.
