Y-History documentary examines the transformation of hidden gems into tourist hotspots

The documentary “Y-History: Urlaub ohne Touris – Wie Geheimtipps seit 200 Jahren zu Hotspots werden” explores the phenomenon of how once-secluded travel destinations transform into overcrowded hotspots. Produced by eco documentaries for SWR and ARD, the film will be available on the ARD Mediathek starting October 5.

Reporter Anne Thiele investigates the drivers behind the search for “undiscovered” locations, noting that while social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and AI accelerate this process, the desire for untouched travel has existed for over 200 years. Thiele uses her experience in Tulum, Mexico, where a former alternative paradise became overcrowded, as a starting point.

The documentary follows Thiele to Barcelona, where she participates in a “hidden gem” tour to experience how the promise of authenticity has become a commercialized product. The investigation also includes segments in Frankfurt, regarding travel planning for Japan, and Armenia, where agencies are developing new narratives to attract travelers.
