Yaşar Elbir preserves traditional kilim weaving in Gaziantep
Yaşar Elbir, an 84-year-old master weaver in Gaziantep, Turkey, continues to practice the traditional art of hand-weaving kilims from a small 3-square-meter workshop. Born in 1942 in the Şahinbey district, Elbir has been dedicated to this craft since 1995, developing unique patterns over the decades.
Despite the rise of machine-made textiles, Elbir maintains a high demand for his handmade products. He produces approximately two kilims per day, which are exported to various regions including the United States, Germany, and France.
To ensure the survival of this cultural heritage, Elbir is actively teaching the craft to students, noting that he is one of the few remaining practitioners of the profession.
