Yaşar Güler addresses regional security and Cyprus interests
Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler addressed the opening ceremony of the National Defense University's 2026-2027 academic year, highlighting regional security priorities. Güler stated that policies of intimidation and non-acceptance directed toward the Cyprus Turks, which have persisted since the 1960s, continue to be strongly implemented.
Güler emphasized that Turkey is actively monitoring risks and threats due to its strategic location. He identified several priority areas for Turkey's security policy, including the ongoing war and security risks in the Black Sea, shifting balances in the Caucasus, developments in the Middle East, and the rights and interests of Turkey and Northern Cyprus in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Minister noted that Turkey maintains a responsible and balanced approach to preserve stability in the Black Sea and supports permanent peace and regional cooperation in the Caucasus. He also underscored Turkey's commitment to protecting the security and legitimate rights of the Cyprus Turks.
