Yaşar University academics blend Ebru art and AI for ceramic collection

Academics from Yaşar University in Izmir have developed a unique ceramic collection that integrates traditional Ebru art with artificial intelligence to enhance the gastronomic experience of the Aegean region. The project, titled “Veriden İze | İzden Ege’ye” (From Data to Trace | From Trace to Aegean), uses AI-supported methods to translate the linear and textural characteristics of Ebru patterns onto ceramic surfaces.

Led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selin Gençtürk and Dr. Didem Dönmez Karagözler, the initiative draws visual inspiration from the nature, olive oil culture, and coastal life of the Aegean. The design process involved close collaboration with professional chefs to ensure that the plates' colors, textures, and forms actively support the perception of flavor, specifically focusing on presentations that highlight the fifth basic taste, umami.

The collection was recently exhibited at the Izmir Chamber of Commerce Exhibition Hall. The research team aims to expand this work into a larger-scale “Design Atlas” covering the seven geographical regions of Turkey.
