Yağıbasan Medresesi roof requires urgent repair in Tokat
The 869-year-old Yağıbasan Medresesi in the Niksar district of Tokat is in urgent need of structural repairs following damage caused by severe storms. Built in 1157 by Nizameddin Yağıbasan during the Danishmend period, the site is recognized as one of the first examples of a closed-courtyard madrasa in Anatolia and served as an early center for medical education.
The roof sustained significant damage during high winds approximately four years ago, with parts of the covering being blown away. Instead of permanent repairs, the damaged sections were covered with blue tarpaulins. A subsequent storm roughly three months ago caused further damage to other parts of the roof.
Recent observations show that the wooden ceiling linings are peeling off and several pieces have become detached. While the building underwent restoration by the General Directorate of Foundations in 2009, the current deterioration poses a risk to its architectural integrity and interior structure. There are ongoing calls for coordinated action between local authorities and relevant institutions to implement a comprehensive restoration plan.
