Yabloko party excluded from Russian elections by Supreme Court
The Russian Supreme Court has officially barred the liberal Yabloko party from participating in the legislative elections scheduled for September 2026. The court's decision to annul the party's federal candidate list follows a lawsuit filed by the nationalist Rodina party, which cited alleged violations of electoral rules and campaign financing issues.
Yabloko is the only legally registered party in Russia that openly advocates for a ceasefire and negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. Party leader Nikolai Rybakov characterized the exclusion as a political maneuver intended to silence voices calling for peace.
In a related development, Yabloko Vice President Lev Chlosberg has been sentenced to eleven years in a penal colony. A court in Pskov convicted Chlosberg of discrediting the Russian military, a charge stemming from his public calls for a ceasefire and his criticism of the current political system.
