Yağcıbedir carpets integrated with historical Edirne red dye
Traditional Yağcıbedir carpets from the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir are being integrated with Edirne red, a historical dye used since the Ottoman era. This initiative combines the unique motifs and double-knotting technique of Yağcıbedir weaving with the natural root dye traditionally produced in the Edirne region.
Ekrem Yavaş, President of the Sındırgı Yağcıbedir Carpets Association and an Intangible Cultural Heritage Artist for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, stated that the goal is to promote Anatolian art to younger generations. The project aims to expand the usage of Edirne red—once known in Europe as ‘Turkish red’—while ensuring the preservation of traditional weaving techniques for the future.
