Yacht runs aground on coral reef in Mahahual

A recreational motor yacht has run aground on a coral reef off the coast of Mahahual, Quintana Roo. The vessel is currently immobilized on the reef crest and remains exposed to constant wave movement, which poses a risk of continuous contact between the hull and the coral formations.

Environmental organizations, including Proyecto Aak Mahahual, have expressed concern regarding potential damage to the marine ecosystem. While there is no official confirmation of fuel leaks or specific damage to coral species at this time, experts warn that such incidents can lead to contamination and physical destruction of the seabed. The area is part of the Mexican Caribbean Biosphere Reserve, a zone of high environmental importance containing corals, seagrass, and diverse marine fauna.

Local groups are calling for maritime authorities to increase surveillance and for the removal of the vessel to be conducted with extreme care by trained personnel to prevent further ecological impact. The exact cause of the grounding has not yet been determined.
