Yacyretá coastal defense works mitigate flooding risks

Coastal defense works at the Yacyretá hydroelectric dam are helping to prevent flooding. While some critics have blamed dams for rising water levels, infrastructure such as large reservoirs can mitigate the impact of floods depending on the relationship between water volume and river flow.

In rivers with massive flows, such as the Paraná River where Yacyretá operates, hydroelectric plants function as 'run-of-the-river' stations with limited storage capacity. While they can partially diminish flood effects, they cannot entirely prevent downstream flooding due to the enormous average flow of approximately 12,000 m3/second.

In contrast, hydroelectric plants on smaller rivers with much larger storage capacities, such as El Chocón on the Limay River, can effectively prevent recurrent flooding in their basins.
