Yacyretá performs emergency repairs to protect power towers

The Yacyretá Binational Entity is conducting urgent maintenance works to protect electrical infrastructure from the Paraná River's historic rise in water levels. The repairs are focused on a sacrificial berm at Cota 65, located on the west side of tower number one of the Argentina 3 extra-high voltage line in Ituzaingó.

The erosion was caused by the kinetic force and constant water discharge from the main spillway, which was fully opened to manage massive river flows. To mitigate the damage, technical teams are using heavy machinery and specialized T7A rip-rap rock to dissipate the energy of the currents and waves, preventing further soil erosion from compromising the tower's base.

The extreme river levels are attributed to heavy rainfall in the upper basin, intensified by the ‘Super Niño’ meteorological phenomenon. This situation has caused severe flooding in riparian areas, particularly in southern Paraguay near Ayolas and Misiones, where entire neighborhoods have been submerged and families displaced.
