Yadadri Thermal Power Station Unit 5 synchronized to grid
The fifth unit of the Yadadri Thermal Power Station (YTPS) in Telangana was successfully synchronized to the grid on Wednesday. This milestone was achieved through the joint efforts of the Telangana Power Generation Corporation Limited (TGGENCO) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).
Located in Veerlapalem village, Nalgonda district, the YTPS project consists of five 800 MW units, providing a total installed capacity of 4,000 MW. While the first four units are already in commercial operation, the synchronization of Unit 5 marks a significant step toward full capacity. The project, which began in 2017, has a revised estimated cost of 36,131 crore rupees.
The addition of this unit is expected to bolster TGGENCO’s ability to meet rising electricity demands. In October, demand surged to 20,003 MW from a typical 15,000 MW, driven largely by increased agricultural pump set usage and domestic consumption amid El Niño conditions.
