Yahoo targets AI growth with new Scout answer engine
Yahoo is attempting to reposition itself in the artificial intelligence era by leveraging its long-standing brand heritage. Supported by Apollo Global Management, the company is focusing on developing proprietary AI tools and consumer-centric products to drive growth.
A central component of this strategy is Scout, an AI-powered answer engine expected to launch fully by the end of this year. Unlike competitors that rely primarily on public web scraping, Scout will utilize Yahoo’s extensive internal assets, including 30 years of search history, user data, and a knowledge graph of over 1 billion entities. The tool is designed to provide answers with clearly cited sources to maintain relationships with publishers.
CEO Jim Lanzone describes Yahoo as an “Internet OG,” suggesting that the brand’s decades of existence provide a level of trust that newer tech companies may lack. Beyond search, Yahoo is expanding its consumer offerings, such as the AlphaSpace investment platform, and aims to monetize AI services through advertising and subscriptions. Wall Street analysts have noted that Yahoo’s current trajectory makes it a potential candidate for an IPO or sale in the near future.
