Yahya Abdul-Mateen II criticizes Disney over Wonder Man cancellation

Actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has criticized Disney and Marvel following the sudden cancellation of the Disney+ series ‘Wonder Man’. Despite receiving a season two renewal in March and an Emmy nomination in July, the decision was reversed in late July.

Abdul-Mateen stated that while he was informed the cancellation was related to viewership numbers, he was not provided with specific data. He noted that the series achieved 618 million minutes of viewing in its first week and entered the Nielsen top 10, though it did not maintain that momentum.

The actor highlighted a perceived pattern regarding the cancellation of Marvel projects with Black leads, pointing to the stalled development of the ‘Blade’ project starring Mahershala Ali. Abdul-Mateen suggested that the company should prioritize changing this narrative by investing in quality stories and resources for diverse creators.
