Wonder Man canceled by Marvel despite previous second season renewal

Marvel Studios has canceled the Disney+ series ‘Wonder Man’ despite having previously announced a second season. Lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II confirmed the decision was based on viewership numbers, though he noted that the specific data was not shared with the cast or creators.

Data analysis from Luminate suggests the series was ‘on the bubble.’ While the show performed respectably in raw minutes streamed, it experienced a 48 percent drop-off in viewership from the premiere to the finale. Luminate indicates that Disney+ series typically require a retention rate of 53 percent or higher to be considered safe from cancellation; ‘Wonder Man’ landed at 52 percent.

Abdul-Mateen II addressed the cancellation by noting the ‘obvious’ optics regarding Marvel’s track record with Black-led projects, drawing comparisons to the long-delayed ‘Blade’ film. He expressed a desire for the studio to provide more resources and quality stories to change this narrative. Despite the cancellation, the series received critical acclaim and earned Abdul-Mateen an Emmy nomination.
