Yahya Hassan's family story to premiere at Royal Danish Theatre

The story of the family of the late Danish poet Yahya Hassan is being adapted for the stage. The production, titled 'Familien Hassan', is set to premiere on September 18 at the Skuespilhuset, part of the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen.

Based on Steffen Stubager's 2024 book, the play dramatizes the lives of Hassan's mother and his four siblings: Kawther, Khadeeja, Abd Al-Salam, and Abdullah. Directed by Sargun Oshana, the narrative explores themes of sibling love, displacement, violence, and the social challenges faced by the family while growing up in the Trillegården housing area near Aarhus.

The production will run at the Skuespilhuset until October 28, 2026, before embarking on a tour across Denmark from November 3 to December 5.
