Yahya Sinwar killed in Rafah during confrontation with Israeli forces

Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas's political bureau, was killed on October 16, 2024, during a confrontation with Israeli forces in the Tal al-Sultan neighborhood of Rafah. Sinwar, who had assumed leadership of the movement following the death of Ismail Haniyeh, was a central figure in the October 7, 2023, Al-Aqsa Flood operations.

Born in 1962 in the Khan Younis refugee camp to a family displaced from Al-Majdal during the 1948 Nakba, Sinwar spent decades in Israeli prisons. During his imprisonment, he became a prominent figure within Hamas, mastered the Hebrew language, and authored the novel ‘The Thorns and the Carnations’. He was released in 2011 as part of a prisoner exchange deal.

His leadership was characterized by a commitment to long-term resistance and efforts to prevent the isolation of the Gaza Strip. His death follows a period of intense conflict in Gaza and highlights the regional dimensions of the struggle, including connections to support from groups in Yemen.
