Yair Golan calls assassination of Ali Khamenei a strategic mistake

Yair Golan, leader of Israel’s Democratic Party and a former Deputy Chief of Staff, has characterized the assassination of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei as a strategic mistake. Speaking in Rishon LeZion, Golan argued that while the elimination of the 86-year-old leader was not inherently undeserved, it failed to serve Israel’s long-term interests.

Golan stated that the assassination did not topple the Iranian government but instead strengthened conservative and ultra-hardline factions. He noted that the succession of Mojtaba Khamenei has placed Iran under the control of more extreme and violent leadership. Furthermore, Golan criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for pursuing unrealistic goals, such as the attempt to overthrow the Iranian government, which he claims has not been achieved and has worsened Israel's strategic position.

The remarks follow the outbreak of the US-Israeli war against Iran in late February, an escalation that led to missile and drone attacks from Tehran and the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz, impacting global energy prices.
