Tatsuya Imai elects to remain with Houston Astros through 2027

Japanese pitcher Tatsuya Imai has decided not to exercise his opt-out clause, committing to remain with the Houston Astros through the 2027 season. Imai, who joined the Astros from the Seibu Lions via the posting system, signed a three-year, $54 million contract last winter.

During his inaugural MLB season, Imai recorded a 4.93 ERA over 76.2 innings across 23 appearances, including 15 starts. While he experienced challenges with command and consistency, he achieved a notable milestone on May 25 by throwing six no-hit innings against Texas. Under his current agreement, Imai is set to earn an $18 million salary in 2027 and will retain an option to opt out following that season.

His decision provides stability to the Astros' pitching rotation as the team enters the offseason. Imai will look to compete for a permanent spot in the starting rotation alongside players such as Hunter Brown and Cristian Javier.
