Yalda Moaiery sentenced to 15 years in Iranian prison
Iranian photojournalist Yalda Moaiery has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by Tehran’s Revolutionary Court. The sentence follows legislation passed after a 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran in 2025, aimed at preventing espionage and cooperation with hostile nations.
According to handwritten notes from a charge sheet, Moaiery faces accusations of providing photographs to organizations linked to the United States and Israel, as well as conducting interviews with media outlets deemed hostile by Iranian authorities. Moaiery reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) raided her home during anti-government protests in January and again following U.S. air strikes earlier this year, seizing her electronic equipment and cameras.
Human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh has noted that the Iranian government has used recent military strikes by the U.S. and Israel as a pretext to intensify crackdowns on protesters and feminists. Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani stated that 249 women were killed during a month of strikes following February 28.
