Yamaha and Volvo Penta showcase clean propulsion at São Paulo Boat Show
At the São Paulo Boat Show 2026, major marine manufacturers showcased new technologies focused on clean energy and hybrid propulsion.
Yamaha revealed a prototype hydrogen outboard motor derived from its XTO line. Unlike fuel cell technology that generates electricity, this prototype is an internal combustion engine adapted to burn pressurized hydrogen. While the technology demonstrates a potential path for maritime propulsion, Yamaha noted that pressurized storage still presents challenges regarding vessel structure and range.
Volvo Penta presented its IPS Hybrid concept, an integrated propulsion system that combines internal combustion engines, electric motors, and batteries. The system allows operators to switch between electric, combustion, or hybrid modes. The electric mode is designed for low-speed navigation, docking maneuvers, and silent anchoring, aiming to reduce emissions and noise.
