Yamaha Motor to use recycled aluminum for DiASil cylinders by 2030

Yamaha Motor has announced a plan to transition from using virgin aluminum to a recycled aluminum alloy for its DiASil engine cylinders by 2030. This shift is expected to reduce annual CO2 emissions by approximately 47,000 tonnes.

Since 2002, Yamaha has utilized DiASil (Die-casting Aluminium Silicon) technology, which creates cylinders entirely from an aluminum-silicon alloy without the need for iron liners or additional surface coatings. While this technology offers superior heat dissipation, lightweight properties, and wear resistance, it has historically required virgin aluminum due to impurities in recycled materials that could compromise the strict metallurgical standards required for the cylinders' microstructure and corrosion resistance.

To overcome this 24-year-old technical challenge, Yamaha engineers have developed a recycled aluminum alloy designed through thermodynamic calculations to match the performance and quality of virgin aluminum, allowing for the same production processes.
