Yamaha Racing warns Liberty Media to protect MotoGP fanbase

Yamaha Motor Racing Managing Director Paolo Pavesio has expressed the need for caution as Liberty Media, the owner of Formula 1, implements new commercial strategies within MotoGP. While Pavesio supports the goal of reaching broader global markets and new audiences, he warns against alienating the existing core fanbase that holds deep emotional ties to the sport.

Under Liberty Media's influence, several structural changes are being considered or implemented. These include hosting races closer to major urban centers, the removal of wildcard riders starting in 2027, and potential discussions regarding separate grids for sprint races. Pavesio noted that the five major MotoGP manufacturers contribute approximately 70 percent of all investments in the championship.

Following the acquisition of a majority stake in Dorna, the MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group has been formed. While the management structure has evolved to include new board members, existing leadership remains involved. Pavesio emphasized that while technical evolutions, such as the transition to 850cc engines in 2027, are necessary, any changes must be part of a thoughtful plan that respects the sport's heritage.
