Yamaha recalls MT-09 and Tracer 9 motorcycles over gearshift defect

Yamaha Motor has initiated a recall for specific motorcycle models equipped with the Y-AMT automated gearshift system. The recall affects variants of the MT-09 and Tracer 9, including the Tracer 9 GT+.

The issue stems from a mechanical defect where the gearshift shaft lacks sufficient durability to withstand repeated shifting. This can cause a stop device on the shaft to break, potentially leading to gearshift failures, the illumination of engine warning lights, or a total failure of the Y-AMT system. In some regions, such as Canada, authorities have warned that the defect could lead to unintended gear shifts and a loss of vehicle control.

In Japan, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) reported that while 40 defects have been identified, no accidents have been linked to the issue so far. Yamaha intends to remedy the problem by replacing the faulty gearshift shaft with a modified component.
