Yamaha unveils YZF-R2 sportbike for Indian market

Yamaha has announced the global debut of its new YZF-R2 sportbike, with the initial launch scheduled for the Indian market in mid-September 2026. Positioned as a premium model above the R15, the R2 is part of Yamaha’s strategy to target high-value segments in ASEAN and emerging markets.

The motorcycle features a newly developed 204cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder DOHC engine producing 26 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 19.1 Nm of torque at 8,000 rpm. It utilizes diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating on the valves and a semi-dry sump lubrication system to enhance performance. The bike is built on a lightweight high-strength steel diamond frame, resulting in a wet weight of approximately 149 kg for the standard version.

Technological features include YCC-T (electronic throttle control), Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) with selectable riding modes, traction control, and a third-generation quick shifter. The R2 will be available in three versions: Standard, QS (Quick Shifter), and the high-end M version. In India, prices are expected to range from approximately 239,500 rupees to 253,000 rupees.
