Yamuna River in Delhi covered in toxic foam despite cleanup projects

Thick layers of toxic foam were observed floating on the surface of the Yamuna River at Kalindi Kunj in Delhi on October 23 and 24. The sightings occurred despite recent government announcements regarding massive investments aimed at river rejuvenation.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta recently highlighted the inauguration of projects worth approximately Rs 9,000 crore intended to clean the river and improve urban infrastructure. These efforts include 43 Delhi Jal Board projects, such as upgrading sewage treatment plants and expanding sewer networks, which were inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

While the government maintains that these investments are part of a long-term commitment to ensure the Yamuna flows uninterrupted and clean, the recurring presence of foam—often linked to untreated wastewater and detergents—continues to pose environmental challenges in the capital.
