Delhi faces dual pollution crisis as Yamuna foam returns and AQI rises

Delhi is experiencing a significant environmental setback as thick layers of toxic white foam have reappeared on the Yamuna River near Kalindi Kunj. This resurgence occurs despite recent government announcements regarding massive infrastructure investments aimed at river rejuvenation.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta recently highlighted the inauguration of 43 projects worth approximately ₹8,941 crore, intended to upgrade wastewater treatment and drinking water infrastructure. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also noted that these projects are part of a broader plan to restore the river, claiming significant progress has already been made.

Simultaneously, the city's air quality has deteriorated. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 187 on Monday, placing the capital in the 'moderate' category, though several monitoring stations recorded much higher, 'poor' levels. In response to the worsening conditions, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has invoked Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which includes restrictions on using coal and firewood in tandoors and limitations on diesel generator sets.
