Yandex data centers hit by series of Ukrainian drone strikes

Ukrainian drone strikes have targeted three major data centers operated by the Russian technology giant Yandex within a single week. The attacks hit facilities in the Sasovo (Ryazan region), Kaluga, and Vladimir regions, causing significant damage to the company's digital infrastructure.

The strikes have disrupted a wide range of Yandex services, including search engines, maps, email, cloud computing, and ride-hailing apps. The impact has extended beyond Russia, causing service outages for users in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. NetBlocks reported that Yandex Cloud traffic dropped to 30 percent of its usual levels, while overall company traffic fell to 63 percent.

Some observers noted a sharp decline in automated bot activity on social media platforms like X following the attacks, though experts debate whether this reflects a drop in disinformation campaigns or simply a reduction in automated web crawlers. The destruction of these facilities, which house supercomputers used for artificial intelligence development, poses a long-term challenge for Russia's technological capabilities due to existing sanctions on hardware.
