Yangpyeong County launches movement to attract horse racing park

Yangpyeong County has launched a large-scale civic movement to attract an eco-friendly horse racing park to the region. The ‘Civic Promotion Group for Attracting a Horse Racing Park to Yangpyeong’ held its inaugural ceremony on October 4, involving approximately 160 local organizations and social groups.

The initiative aims to repurpose the Yongmunsan Shooting Range, a military facility that has been in operation for approximately 40 years. Proponents argue that closing and relocating the shooting range to establish a horse racing park would transform the area into a new hub for tourism, leisure, and regional economic growth.

Local officials, including Yangpyeong County Mayor Jeon Jin-seon, have highlighted the site's advantages, noting that the proposed area is more than four times the size of the current Gwacheon Racecourse. They emphasized that the land consists of state and public property, which would minimize delays related to land acquisition and compensation. The county has already submitted proposals to the Korea Racing Authority, citing the site's proximity to major metropolitan areas and its natural environment as key strengths.
