Yangpyeong restaurant ceiling collapse injures 14 people
On the evening of 30 May, at about 18:36 local time, the ceiling of an all‑you‑can‑eat restaurant in Yangpyeong‑eup, Yangpyeong‑gun, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, gave way and fell onto the dining area. The one‑story building, constructed with a lightweight steel frame and covering roughly 2,300 m², collapsed without any warning signs.
Fourteen patrons – two men and twelve women – were injured, ranging from minor to moderate injuries. Approximately 50–60 diners were present at the time; many were able to flee before the ceiling fully hit the floor. Fire‑department crews dispatched 21 fire‑engine vehicles and 64 personnel, set up an on‑site emergency medical station, and transported the victims to nearby hospitals. Police and fire officials are investigating the cause, focusing on possible structural or maintenance failures.
The incident has prompted safety inspections of similar lightweight‑construction eateries in the region as authorities seek to determine responsibility and prevent future collapses.
