Yanis Varoufakis rejects coalition with Alexis Tsipras
Yanis Varoufakis, leader of the MeRA25 party, has categorically rejected any possibility of entering a coalition government with former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. During an interview on the OPEN television channel, Varoufakis stated, “No, with nothing. I prefer death,” when asked about potential post-election cooperation.
Varoufakis cited the political rupture following the 2015 referendum and the subsequent signing of the third memorandum as the decisive turning point in their relationship. He criticized Tsipras's recent political rebranding, using metaphors such as “the rotten fig has ripened” and “the soufflé does not rise twice” to suggest that the former leader cannot return to his previous political standing.
Furthermore, Varoufakis argued that the substantive policy differences between major political figures, including Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Nikos Androulakis, and Alexis Tsipras, are smaller than they appear, claiming they often create “cacophony” to mask their similarities. He also criticized Tsipras's proposal for a “patriotic contribution” from the wealthy, arguing that such measures do not address the underlying economic models that produce inequality.
