Yann LeCun calls Elon Musk's xAI a failure and warns of AI bubble

Yann LeCun, former chief AI scientist at Meta and founder of AMI Labs, told CNBC that Elon Musk’s xAI is “kind of a failure” because its founding team has largely left and the company now struggles to recruit top AI talent. He said Musk’s behavior toward former staff makes hiring difficult and that xAI relies on renting its massive Colossus data‑center infrastructure in Memphis to recoup costs.

LeCun warned that the broader artificial‑intelligence industry could face a “big bubble explosion.” He noted that AI service prices are rising while operating costs are not falling quickly enough, leaving many firms losing money and relying on investor subsidies. He added that companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic will have to raise prices or cut costs to avoid a market correction.

The criticism comes after Musk merged xAI with SpaceX in a deal that valued the combined business at about $1.25 trillion. SpaceX’s AI segment reported a $2.5 billion operating loss for the quarter ended 31 March. LeCun also reiterated his view that large language models are a dead‑end and that the next five years will see a shift toward “world models” as the path to true AI.
