Yann LeCun calls Elon Musk's xAI a failure and warns of AI industry bubble

AI pioneer Yann LeCun said Elon Musk's artificial‑intelligence venture xAI is "kind of a failure" in an interview at the VivaTech conference in Paris. He pointed to the departure of several co‑founders and a hostile environment under Musk that makes it "very, very difficult" to recruit top AI researchers.

LeCun noted that xAI’s Memphis‑based data‑center assets are being rented out to rivals such as Google and Anthropic, a step he said reflects financial pressure. In the first quarter, the SpaceX‑xAI AI segment recorded a $2.5 billion operating loss.

Beyond xAI, LeCun warned that the broader AI sector is heading toward a "big bubble explosion" unless providers raise prices or cut costs, as the high expense of large‑language models outpaces user willingness to pay. He highlighted his own company, AMI Labs, which recently closed a $1 billion funding round to develop world‑model technology.
