Yann Massombo transfer dispute sparks controversy in Austrian football

A controversy has emerged in the Austrian Bundesliga involving Altach midfielder Yann Massombo and Sturm Graz coach Fabio Ingolitsch. According to club officials, Ingolitsch contacted Massombo via telephone on the Friday before a match against Sturm Graz to discuss a potential transfer.

Following the call, the 26-year-old player refused to travel from Vorarlberg to Styria for the scheduled away game, effectively going on strike. This refusal reportedly occurred despite attempts by teammates to influence him. Massombo and Ingolitsch previously worked together at Altach for six months in late 2025.

Ingolitsch has defended his actions, describing the contact as a “normal process.” The incident has sparked significant debate within the Austrian football scene regarding the ethics of coaches contacting opposing players about transfers prior to matches.
