Belgian defender Thomas Meunier signs two‑year deal with Sunderland

Thomas Meunier, a 34‑year‑old Belgian right‑back, has completed a free‑transfer move to Premier League club Sunderland on a two‑year contract. After his Lille contract expired on 30 June, he travelled to Newcastle for medical tests and was confirmed as Sunderland’s first summer signing. Meunier said he was “hugely excited and honoured to join Sunderland”, praising the club’s ambition and its upcoming Europa League campaign.

Sunderland, back in the Premier League after promotion, finished seventh last season and secured a place in the Europa League. The club expects Meunier’s experience – 83 caps for Belgium, World Cup quarter‑final participation, and previous spells at Paris Saint‑Germain and Borussia Dortmund – to bolster the squad both on and off the pitch.
